It is very unfortunate but true. People get ripped off on daily basis at Prague airport, main train station, Holesovice train station and basically anywhere else in tourist zones. How to avoid being ripped off or taking a "Ripping off taxi"?
1. Make sure to prebook the service or book once you arrive
Because then you know how much you are going to pay, what you will get, where your driver waits etc. Additionaly you safe energy and time.
2. Never go with an unknown taxi driver that comes to you once you arrive and offers "super special great best rate in town" unless you know the regular OFFICIAL fixed or tarif rate.
It is the usual way for freelancing taxi drivers to get an extra business. They browse at arrival halls and randomly offer taxi services to city center. The rate is often double or three times more than official service.
3. Do not stop a taxi off the street
As you do not speak Czech you are an easy target for being ripped off. Stopping a taxi off the streets makes the taxi driver almost untrackable (unless you remember plate number), therefor they usually rip you off by using tricks with the meters or simply going a lot longer route. As you are not familliar with the city, it should be easy to trick you too...
4. Learn what you are booking when booking in advance
Do not book straight away once you discover first service. There are plenty of good websites and reliable companies providing same service. But there are also companies that do not provide what they offer. You should learn about the service you are about to book. Look for information about guaranteed quality of service, used types and models of vehicles, licensed ability to provide passengers services etc. Read independent reviews at tripadvisor, frommers or Prague airport transfers forum |
